General comments:

This is probably a one-time joint project by two wonderful artists: Teresa Doyle, who has a lovely, clear, expressive soprano, and Toshizo Tanaka, who has a dextrous and evocative hand on the lute. A delightful partnership. (Neile)

Comments:

This is an album of Renaissance love songs by John Dowland, with "Greensleeves" and a Frances Pilkington song. The combination of Teresa Doyle's clear, precise, delicately emotional vocals with Toshizo Tanaka's spritely and evocative lute is delightful. The clarity and purity of these interpretations is wonderful. My favourite tracks are probably "Come Again: Sweet Love Doth Now Invite" and "Can She Excuse my Wrongs"; the familiar "Greensleeves" is of course wonderfully performed as well. Anyone who likes early music would enjoy this collection of yearning songs, but I also recommend it to those who like acoustic instruments and singing—these performances are timeless. (Neile)
