Daphne LawlessCountry of origin:New Zealand Type of music generally:Mainstream pop Status:Most recent release, Anastasia (ep, 2007) See also:Daphne Lawless's site Comparisons:Jenn Vix in style a tiny bit Covers/own material:Own with some lyrical quotations from other writers, occasional use of traditional music, other arrangements General comments:Artless-feeling quirky deep-voiced, bouncy dark pop with electronic backing. Her press calls her work: "gothic-progressive electro-pop" and says "both her deep and melodious vocals and her keyboard technique are quite distinctive." Both these statements are quite true. In other words, it's definitely not for everyone. However, if you have an open mind, you'll find this disc has its charms—these are songs that tell stories, so people who like story songs should check out "Anastasia's Clone" and "Two Swans". Fans of esperanto should check out the last two songs, which have been translated into and are sung on that language.
