The Living SistersCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Folk-pop Status:Most recent release, Harmony Is Real: Songs for a Happy Holiday (seasonal, 2014); most recent release of own material, Love to Live (2010) See also:Wikipedia's entry for The Living Sisters Covers/own material:Own General comments:A super-group of singer-songwriters Inara George, Eleni Mandell, and Becky Stark reminiscent of 1960s girl groups, but folkier. A bit like what She & Him would be if they were She & She & She. (JoAnn Whetsell) Recommended first album:Love to Live Recordings:
Love to LiveRelease info:2010—Vanguard—78042-2 Availability:Wide Ecto priority:Highly recommended Group members:Inara George Comments:Such a lovely and charming album. Very sweet and retro, reminiscent of the harmony groups of the 1950s and 60s. Check out "This Mountain Has Skies" and "Double Knots" for a sample of how they blend pop with folk, a wee bit of country, and a whole lot of cute. (JoAnn Whetsell) Run for CoverRelease info:2013—Vanguard Availability:Wide Ecto priority:Highly recommended Comments:This 6-track EP would be really great if it only included the first 4 tracks. "Make Love to Me" and "Can You Get to That?" are catchy and fun, and the bluesy arrangement of "Que Sera Sera" is one of the more interesting I've heard. The country ballad "A Poor Man's Roses (Or a Rich Man's Gold)" is my favorite. But then they go into "Jolene". Love the song, but not this a cappella version (though it's growing on me). "Sweet Dreams" is okay in the right mood, but most of the time I find it pretty dreary. So I go back to the beginning. Love those first 4 tracks. (JoAnn Whetsell) Thanks to JoAnn Whetsell for work on this entry.
