General comments:

Britney Moore's music has a truly unique sound. She's very young (17 when she recorded this) and while there's something artless about her sound, it's thoughtful and deliberate, almost art song. She's not making mistakes here. There's something about it that reminds me a lot of Virginia Astley but more in tone and tunes than the overall sound. Her vocals are strong and assured (unlike Astley's fragile, child-like vocals). There's also a touch of Patti Smith's half-sung early work. The often-fuzzy background sounds have a stripped-down but evocative indie-synth feel that feels both classic yet contemporary and somehow reminds me of the sound of Young Marble Giants. Definitely someone to watch out for! (Neile)

Comments:

A fascinating collection of songs and sounds. It reminds me a lot of Patti Smith's early work where she half-sings half-chants a couple of lilting tunes: there's something in the way Britney Moore is using her voice that is just like that. They also have strong touches of Virginia Astley's work from the In Gardens Where We Feel Secure-era and a touch of Young Marble Giants's classic dispassionate yet powerful music-making. It makes for a fascinating combination. (Neile)
