Gavin O'Loghlen & Cotters BequestCountry of origin:Australia Type of music generally:Traditional Celtic folk, progressive folk, progressive rock Status:Most recent release, The Poet and the Priest (Gavin O'Loghlen solo, c. 2007) See also:Locrian Records site Comparisons:The group has been compared to King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, and early Genesis. Early Clannad, generally. Different songs reminded me of other artists as well: Enya, Loreena McKennitt (in her pure Celtic tunes), even Sarah McLachlan (Touch era) and Peter Gabriel ("In Your Eyes" style). (JoAnn Whetsell) Covers/own material:Own, based on traditional sound and materials General comments:Gavin O'Loghlen & Cotters Bequest is a traditional folk group from Australia. There are 6 members playing 23 instruments in Cotters Bequest, and they are the only group in Australia (and possibly in the world) to write, record, and perform in 5 Celtic languages: Welsh, Cornish, Scottish, Irish, and Manx Gaelic. They sing in English too, and their songs tell stories using the language, history and culture of the European Celtic countries. My Mother's CountryRelease info:1998—Locrian Records site—BFS CD 9806 Availability:See Locrian Records' site Ecto priority:Highly recommended for fans of traditional folk Group members:Gavin O'Loghlen—acoustic 6- & 12-string guitars, electric guitars, drums, bass, bodhran, percussion, keyboards, vocoders, programming, Prophet 5, kalimba, highland pipes, low and tin whistles, vocals Guest artists:Liesl Warner—haprs Produced by:Gavin O'Loghlen Comments:This is a beautiful album. It "seems" pretty straight-forward; there are some instrumentals and some songs with vocals, some slower songs and some more upbeat ones. But the range of the vocalists keeps it lively and surprising. The songs are not very long (all are under 5 minutes), but they have a generous amount of space for both the vocals of the storyline and the instrumentals. Overall the feel is of a slower album, good for quiet afternoons and contemplative moods.
