SnowdriftCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Evocative/eclectic dark ethereal ectronica Status:Most recent release, Starry All Over (2010); band has morphed into Wind Burial with a new 1970s psychedelic rock sound See also:Snowdrift's MySpace page Comparisons:Hard call, like other ethereal artists, but darker and somewhat more organic sounding Covers/own material:Own General comments:Dark and dreamy electronic music anchored by Kat Terran's strong vocals. A snowdrift of sound, but shadowy, a coaldrift. (Neile) Recommended first album:snowdrift is the only one we've heard Recordings:
snowdriftRelease info:2007—Paradigms Records Availability:See Snowdrift's site Ecto priority:Recommended Group members:Kat Terran—vocals, electric guitar Comments:Dark, dreamy, drifty sounds with Kat Terran's raspy vocals. The beginning track, "September", sets the tone for the album. Musically very interesting, it's a mix of traditional electronic sounds with an emphasis on organic sounds and Kat Terran's aching alto to give it weight. "Sleeping Man"'s bass-line gives this a less dreamy feel as does the dark, twisting vocal line. "Outlaw Engineers" is the most dynamic track, a terrific song, and the most here like Kat Terran's solo work. "Alaska" is lovely and dark, quite traditionally ethereal except the focus on the yearning lyric line is stronger than in most such songs and the song more stripped down. In "Aviary" Kat Terran becomes a more alto version of other dreamy ethereal crooners. "House of Cards" is again more stripped down to the melody—a haunting, yearning song. The album ends with "track 11", a heartbreaker. Overall, a highly recommended disc for those who like dark, dreamy music. (Neile) |
