NajwaCountry of origin:Spain Type of music generally:Ectronica alternative pop Status:Most recent release, Rat Race (2014) See also:Najwa's site Comparisons:Perhaps closest is Mandalay, Crustation, a less-mainstream Dido Covers/own material:Own, occasional cowriting General comments:Najwa Nimri is an electronic-based pop artist from Madrid with an intriguing soft vocal style. I first heard of her on a dreampop music list and once I heard a sample sought out more. I am especially fond of Carefully, the first album of hers I found. (Neile) Recommended first album:Carefully is my favourite of the two I've heard. (Neile) Recordings:
CarefullyRelease info:2001—Subterfuge Records (Spain)—ref.21234 CD Availability:Ecto priority:Highly recommended for fans of electronic pop Group members:Najwa Nimri Guest artists:Luiz Álverez—violin, viola Produced by:Roúl Santos Comments:There's something compelling about this disc. It's smooth electronic pop, but has a captivating edge for me. Something to do with the interesting songwriting, perhaps. In any case, I have loved this since I received it. Especially "this perfume" which includes the "carefully, carefully, carefully" of the title and the soft urgency of "are you moving / is this moving / are you moving?" of "That cyclone". There are so many so lovely moments in this album. Truly enjoyable listening. It's sad that she's so little known in the U.S. (Neile) MaydayRelease info:2003—Do East West (Warner)—5046 66562 2 Availability:Europe Ecto priority:Recommended for electronic pop fans Group members:Najwa Nimri Guest artists:Floren Muñoz—electric guitar (1, 2, 7) Produced by:Roúl Santos Comments:This is very pretty pop. Najwa's vocals are lovely here. This is a little smooth for my tastes generally, but has lovely moments and a lot of ectophiles will find this album irresistable. (Neile) |
